Rome/Neuherberg, November 2015: Stefanie Eyerich was awarded the WAO Henning Loøwenstein Research Award (20.000 €) for her achievements in the field of allergy research. Stefanie Eyerich, who is working at the Center of Allergy and Environment (ZAUM) received the price at a solemn award ceremony in Rome on the 20th of November.
In her working group „Skin Immunology and Allergy“ she is focusing on the role of T helper cells in the context of skin allergic diseases like e.g. atopic dermatitis. The group is currently working on two approaches:

NEWS: The role of the microbiota in preventing allergies

Neuherberg & Paris, July 2015: The human body is inhabited by billions of symbiotic bacteria, carrying a diversity that is unique to each individual. The microbiota is involved in many mechanisms, including digestion, vitamin synthesis and host defense. It is well established that a loss of bacterial symbionts promotes the development of allergies. Scientists at Helmholtz Zentrum Munich, at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and the Institut Pasteur in Paris have succeeded in explaining this phenomenon, and demonstrate how the microbiota acts on the balance of the immune system: the presence of microbes specifically blocks the immune cells responsible for triggering allergies. These results are published in the journal Science.

NEWS: Poster Prize for Dennis Rußkamp and Maximilian Schiener

Deutscher Allergie Kongress 2015, Cologne: Maximilian Schiener, Ph.D student at the „Molecular and Translational Allergology“ group of Dr. Simon Blank, was awarded with a poster prize. His Poster had the title: "Antigen 5 of different hymenoptera species are highly cross-reactive and do not allow the clear identification of the culprit venom".

EAACI Congress 2015, Barcelona: Dennis Rußkamp, Ph.D. student in the "Molecular and Translational Allergology" group (Head Dr. Simon Blank) at the Institute of Allergy Research was awarded with a poster prize at the Congress of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), held in Barcelona, Spain from 6th to 10th of June 2015, for his poster "Local inhibition of IL-4- and IL-13-mediated signaling as adjuvant for tolerance induction during allergen-specific immunotherapy" in the session "Allergen immunotherapy and immune response to treatment.
Moreover, Maximilian Schiener, Ph.D. student in the same group, received a travel grant for the EAACI congress after his abstract entitled "Antigens 5 of different hymenoptera species are highly cross-reactive and do not allow the clear identification of the culprit venom" was selected for a oral presentation.

Dennis Rußkamp and Maximilian Schiener (Molecular and Translational Allergology group) were elected as new chair and co-chair of the Junior Member section of the German Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (DGAKI).

Die Anfälligkeit für Heuschnupfen verdoppelt sich von Dekade zu Dekade, trotz der angebotenen Schutzmaßnahmen wie der Hypersensibilisierung.

NEWS: New diagnostic test to distinguish psoriasis from eczema

Neuherberg, 10 July 2014. In many patients it is not easy to differentiate between the chronic inflammatory skin diseases psoriasis and eczema. Researchers at the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have now developed a procedure based on a skin analysis that enables an exact diagnosis to be made. The results have been published in the specialist journal Science Translational Medicine.

NEWS: Oberfläche von Nanopartikeln steuert gesundheitliche Effekte

Neuherberg, 08.07.2014. Nanopartikel können eine Rolle bei der Entstehung allergischer Reaktionen spielen. Durch bestimmte chemische Veränderungen ihrer Oberfläche allerdings lässt sich dieser Effekt reduzieren. Dies haben Wissenschaftler um PD. Dr. Francesca Alessandrini vom Institut für Allergieforschung (IAF) am Helmholtz Zentrum München in einer aktuellen Studie herausgefunden, die im 'International Journal of Nanomedicine' veröffentlicht wurde.
